Adhesives

COLLOIDAL SILICA 406

Colloidal Silica is an epoxy thickening additive used to control the viscosity of the epoxy. It prevents epoxy runoff in vertical and overhead joints. This is a very strong adhesive filler. It creates a smooth mixture, ideal for general epoxy bonding and filleting. 406 can be used to improve the strength, abrasion resistance, and consistency of epoxy fairing compounds. The result is a tougher, smoother surface.

Available in 1 Litre, 4 Litre, 12 Litre, 20 Litre and 10kg

MICROFIBRE BLEND 413

Microfibre Blend 413 is a mixture of short-fibre cotton and colloidal silica. It has largely replaced pure Colloidal Silica and pure Microfibre as thickening agents for WEST SYSTEM liquid resins.

Addition of cotton flock has served to substantially reduce the tendency of the colloidal silica to float around in the air and makes the mixing into resin much easier. Furthermore, the colloidal silica serves to offer an added degree of thixotropy to the microfibre, and substantially improves the spreading and working properties of the adhesive mix.

Because such small quantities must be added in terms of weight, the effect of WEST SYSTEM 413 on the cured resin properties are negligible, but dispersion of the powderinto the resin must be thorough for optimum results.

Available in 1 Litre, 4 Litre, 12 Litre, 20 Litre and 200 Litre

Filleting

MICROSPHERE GLASS SPHERES 409

A mixture of silicate microspheres for general purpose low density filling, fairing and coving. It can also be used as part of the glue make up when bonding low density cores, such as PVC foams etc. where the glue joint can be difficult to fair without damaging the core either side. The blend of silicate microspheres extends the filler and allows for easy sanding after curing.

Fairing

MICROBALLOON 417

A low-density phenolic microballoon-based filler used to make fairing putties that are easy to sand or carve. When added to epoxy resin, WEST SYSTEM 417 filler is a thick low density compound. Use WEST SYSTEM 417 to extend resin, to reduce weight, shrinkage and sanding. The addition of a small percentage of WEST SYSTEM 406 will reduce resin drainage and assist spreading properties. Various resin systems may react differently, so experiment before proceeding to large projects. WEST SYSTEM 417 is reasonably strong on a strength-to-weight basis. Also cures to a dark red/brown colour – popular for matching to wood.

Available in 4 Litre, 12 Litre, 20 Litre and 12 kg / 114 Litre.

MICROLIGHT 410

A low density blended filler specifically designed for fairing applications. When mixed with WEST SYSTEM brand epoxy, this filler has a smooth, creamy texture. It trowels on easily, holds a feather-edge well, and resists running or sagging on vertical surfaces. WEST SYSTEM 410 filler’s physical properties make sanding about 30%easier than that of WEST SYSTEM 417 Microballoons. Unlike most fillers, WEST SYSTEM 410 is light-coloured. Therefore priming and/or pigmented epoxy coating may not be needed before painting.

Available in 4 Litre, 12 Litre, 20 Litre and 6.5 kg / 155 Litre.

Specialty Fillers

HIGH DENSITY POWDER 404

A thickening additive developed for maximum physical properties in hardware bonding, where high-cyclic loads are anticipated. 404 has very high compressive strength and it can also be used for filleting and gap filling where maximum strength is necessary.

Available in 4 Litre, 12 Litre, 20 Litre and 62.5 Litre / 25 kg, 20 Litre.

Available in 4 Litre, 12 Litre, 20 Litre and 22.7 kg.

MICROSHPERE BLEND 411

A mixture of silicate microspheres and colloidal silica for general purpose low density filling, fairing and coving. It can also be used as part of the glue make up when bonding low density cores such as PVC foams etc. where the glue joint can be difficult to fair without damaging the core either side.

The colloidal silica in the mixture gives the mixture excellent resistance to sag by producing a thixotropic component to the mix. The blend of silicate microspheres extends the filler and allows for easy sanding after curing.

ALUMINIUM POWDER

Aluminium powder will increase the hardness and abrasion resistance of the coated surface, and improve its moisture resistance. Aluminium provides limited protection from ultraviolet light in areas that will not be protected with other coatings, and can be used as a base for subsequent
painting.

Available in 500g, 1kg, 4kg, 20kg.

Available in 1 Litre, 4 Litre, 12 Litre, 20 Litre and 200 Litre.

GRAPHITE POWDER

A fine black powder that can be mixed with epoxy to produce a low-friction exterior coating with increased scuff resistance and durability. Epoxy/graphite is commonly used as a low-load, low-speed bearing surface, as a coating on rudders and centreboards, or on the bottoms of racing craft that are dry sailed. It does not provide anti-fouling qualities.

Available in 500g, 1kg, 4kg, 20kg.

A wipe on only solvent based semi-permanent release agent. A high slip product for difficult moulds. Not good for gelcoats, as being so slippery the gels have trouble holding their films. Has a duller finish. 10 minutes between coats, 30 minutes before moulding. 3 – 5 coats recommended.

Fibre Fillers

MILLED FIBRE

Finely chopped glass fibre.

Available in 1 Litre, 4 Litre, 14 kg.

GLASS FLAKE

Grade 160 and 600.

Available in 20 kg.

Glass flake can be used in coatings to improve reinforcement and thermal properties
